why is the radical symbol not only a quare root symbol

When the radical symbol is being used for a square root, we sometimes see it written as √x, however this is a shorthand for the special case of ⁿ√x, read as "the n^th root of x", where n=2.

Similarly to the square root, we can see that ³√x would be the cubed root.
