Use the Pythagorean theorem, that is

a² + b² = c² where a and b are the sides of the rectangle and c is the diagonal.

Example if the screen measures 27" by 36", those numbers will be a and b.

So. 27² + 36² = c²

729 + 1296 = c²

2025 = c²

Now take the square root.

c = 45". Note the diagonal will always be longer than either of the sides.
