Question

Mariam took a taxi from her house to the airport. The taxi company charged a pick-up fee of $2.90 plus $1.25 per mile. The total fare was $6.65, not including the tip. Write and solve an equation which can be used to determine mm, the number of miles in the taxi ride

First isolate the variable term on one side by subtracting 2.90 from both sides (subtraction is the opposite of addition).. Then you can divide both sides by 1.25 to find m by itself.(division is the opposite of multiplication).

Check your answer by substituting your value for m into the equation to see if it "balances".
