Question

Blue Bird Taxi charges a $2.00 flat rate in addition to $0.55 per mile. Marcy only has $10 to spend on a taxi ride. What is the farthest she can ride without going over her limit?

10 >/= 2+.55d

.max d is when .55d =10-2 = 8

d = 8/.55 = 800/55= 160/11 = 14 6/11 miles

.55(160/11) = 160(.05)= 8.00

Her $10 pays $8 for mileage + $2 flat rate = 8+2+10, when she drives 14 6/11 miles

14 6/11 miles = about 14.55 miles

if they charge for a full mile when you go a part of a mile, then 14 miles is the limit on $10

but she'd have another 30 cents left over. 30/55 = 6/11th of a mile
