Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
pick a number, an easy integer number
say they started at 100
then down 14% to 86
then up 22% from 86 to (1.22)(86) = 104.92
that's only a 4.92% increase since 2 years ago when it started at 100.
Not an 8% increase
try any other number, say 50
down 14% means down to 43. 50-.14(50) = 50-7=43
up 22% means up to 52.46. 43 +.22(43)=43+9.46=52.46
that's a 4.92% increase, not 8%. 52.46-50= 2.46. 2.46/50=.0492=4.92%
