The senior class orders a total of 256 class rings. The number of gold rings is 3 times the number of silver rings. How many gold rings and silver rings did the class order?
Let x be silver rings and y be gold rings.
Then x + y = 256 and y = 3x. Therefore, 3x + x = 4x = 256 implies x = 256/4 = 64.
Thus, there are 64 silver rings and 3(64) = 192 gold rings.
