Hi Stacy,
A covered water tank is in the shape of a cylinder.
The tank has a 28-inch diameter and a height of 66 inches.
To the nearest square inch, what is the surface area of the water tank
To determine the surface area you need to think about the "net" of the cylinder
It's what the cylinder looks like if you took the top and bottom off, then sliced it down the side and lay it flat.
Thinking of the cylinder, the top and the bottom are a circle.
When you cut the side and lay it flat, it is in the shape of a rectangle.
Area of the top and bottom
A = π r2
r = radius of top and bottom = 1/2 Diameter = (1/2)(28)=14
A = π (14) 2 = 196 π
Are of the rectangular shape.
A = w x l
w = circumference of the circle from the top/bottom of can
w = π D (D=diameter)
l = height = 66
The total surface area will be
2 x π 142 + π(28) = 1319.468915
Rounded to the nearest 10th.. 1319.5inches2
Hope this helps.
