Excellent overview above! I’d like to emphasize #3 Academic success. Some teachers I worked with thought that ESL students were proficient in English because these students chatted up a storm. But there is a big difference between conversational abilities and academic English. ESL students, for example, struggle in science classes if their teachers don’t explain and use in context science-specific processes like “hypothesis,” “observation,” and “procedure.” The academic term for this is “Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP)”07/28/23
