How can I remember where the moon is located when it is a new moon or a full moon?
The moon ORBITS (revolves) the earth as the earth revolves around the sun. The positions of these 3 celestial bodies cause the various phases of the moon. When the moon is located between the earth and sun, as seen from above the north pole, it is a NEW moon and the order is Sun-Moon-Earth. Think new = near the sun. When the moon is on the opposite side of the earth as the sun (Sun-Earth-Moon), it is a FULL moon. Think full = far. New near full far.

You have included portion of answer to your question. I suggest a way to remember the Full Moon situation. Here is key to memorize
Semester (Study time at University) Full - first three letters S- Sun, E-Earth & M- Moon gives
Full Moon condition. Other situation is New Moon when condition is Sun, Moon & Earth.
I hope this helps.
