Please help, I don’t understand

Elsa has less than 40 apples. if she gave 5 apples to each of her friends, she will have 3 apples left. if she gave 7 apples to each of her friends, she will shorts of 2 apples. How many apples does Elsa have?

From "2 apples short" and "3 apples left", you can conclude that the number of friends = 1.5 +1 = 2.5 (1.5 friends get 2 apples each, one friend gets none at all). I think the original problem is not 5/7 but 6/7 apples. In this case, 33 apples will work for 5 friends.

Sorry, I misread, the" 2 apples short". Why the sense of remainder would change escaped me. Of course, 33 is correct.
