An airplane crosses the Atlantic Ocean (3000 miles) with an airspeed of

miles per hour. The cost C (in dollars) per passenger is given by

C(x)=75+x20+36,000x,

where x is the ground speed (airspeed

Air speed is given yet formula requires ground speed. Review your post (one of many) for accuracy.

I believe airspeed and ground speed are equal when there is no wind. However, I think something is wrong with the equation. Substituting 600 for x will yield an humongous number for cost per passenger!

Peter R.: A definition of groundspeed is given as airspeed plus or minus wind (speed).

Yes - and windspeed is given as = 0 (quiescent).
