Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart's ability to pump blood efficiently is compromised. The signs and symptoms of heart failure can vary depending on whether it is left-sided or right-sided heart failure. Here are the common signs and symptoms associated with heart failure:
1. General symptoms:
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing (dyspnea) during exertion or at rest
- Fatigue and weakness
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Persistent cough or wheezing
- Swelling in the ankles, legs, feet (edema), or abdomen (ascites)
- Sudden weight gain due to fluid retention
- Decreased appetite and nausea
- Increased need to urinate, especially at night (nocturia)
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
Left-sided heart failure:
When the left side of the heart is affected, it struggles to pump oxygenated blood efficiently from the lungs to the rest of the body. Signs and symptoms may include:
- Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity or lying flat (orthopnea)
- Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea: waking up suddenly at night, feeling shortness of breath, and needing to sit upright or stand to relieve it
- Coughing up frothy, pink-tinged mucus (caused by fluid accumulation in the lungs)
- Fatigue and weakness
Right-sided heart failure:
Right-sided heart failure occurs when the right side of the heart is unable to effectively pump blood returning from the body to the lungs for oxygenation. Signs and symptoms may include:
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet (peripheral edema)
- Swelling in the abdomen (ascites)
- Enlarged liver and spleen
- Weight gain due to fluid retention
- Loss of appetite and indigestion
- Distended neck veins
It's important to note that the symptoms of heart failure can vary from person to person, and some individuals may experience a combination of left and right-sided heart failure symptoms. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
