If it takes 1omin. to cut a log in 6 pieces, how many minutes will it take to cut the log in 8 pieces?

There are a number of ways to solve this.  Probably the simplest is to cross-multiply, using the ratios you've already set up.

6/10 = 8/x

That implies

6×x = 8×10

6×x = 80

(6×x)/6 = 80/6

(6×x)/6 = 80/6

x = 13 1/3 minutes = 13 minutes, 20 seconds
