Five random books are chosen from a library shelf. The books have the following number of pages: {546, 434, 601, 498, 580}. Compared to these books, what would be a book that has an abnormally large number of pages?

Need to calculate mean and std deviation. Entries that lie more than two std deviations from the mean are considered unusual. Those that lie more than three std deviations are very unusual.

mean = about 532 = arithmetic average of the 5 numbers

standard deviation about 67


532+/-2(67) = 532+/-134 = 666 or 398


anything >666 or less than 398 is abnormally large or small, as it's more than 2 standard deviations from the mean

which is outside of a 95% confidence interval, a commonly used margin of error


anything >666 or < 398 might be considered an "outlier" and rejected as impossible, unlikely or a mistake
