A local theater group is performing this weekend. Adult tickets are $10.00 and high school students pay $7.50. A total of thirty people went to the play and they paid $275 combined. How many adults attended the play?

A + H = 30, so H = 30 - A

For the dollars: 10A + 7.50 H = 275 Substitute

10A + 7.50(30 - A) = 275 Use distributive rule to eliminate parentheses.

10A + 225 - 7.50A = 275 Combine like terms.

2.50A = 50 -> A = 50/2.50

A = 20, so H must be 10.

Check: $10(20) + $7.50(10) = 200 + 75 = $275 total ticket sales.
