Can use completing the square method or quadratic formula.
Complete the square: x2 + 6x - 1 = 0
x2 + 6x = 1
Need to complete the square by adding (6/2)2, or 9 to both sides
x2 + 6x + 9 = 1 + 9 = 10
Factoring: (x + 3)(x + 3) = 10
(x + 3)2 = 10
Take square root of both sides: x + 3 = √10
Answer: x = -3 ± √10
Can check using quadratic equation.
