Definition of pronoun:
Pronoun is a word which is mainly used to replace noun
Explaination for ur question:
First of all HE ' is used to describe the action done by third person male. Like wise in the first half of the sentence that is "HE threatened to kill the casier" - here the first HE represent the action done by robber and in the second half of the sentence that is "if he did not open the vault" in this sentence the word HE represent the cashier that is if he fails to open the door or cupboard then he will get killed by the robber.
So here i would like to conclude that pronoun "He" in this sentence is not only specifically mentioned the cashier also mentioned the action which is going to done by robber. So here, The word HE represent the major action which is going to done by the robber on cashier
