Replace y by zero, then solve the resulting equation for x, by (1) adding 12 to each side; and (2) dividing both sides by 4. The result is x = 3. Therefore the x intercept is (3,0).
This problem makes use of the rules for solving equations: One may perform any of the four basic operations [+, -, x, ÷] to each side of an equation, with the exception of division by zero, which is undefined.

4x = 12
x = 12/4 = 3
