use FOIL,

First

Outside

Inside

Last Terms, then combine the Outside and Inside products, combining like terms

x times x = x^2

x times 4 = 4x

-6 times x = -6x

4x-6x = -2x

-6 times 4 = -24

y = x^2 -2x -24
