Question

The length of a rectangular garden is 9 feet more than the width. it is surrounded by a brick walkway 4 feet wide. write an expression in the simplest form to represent the total area of the garden and walkway

Start by drawing a picture. Area = length x width. If w=width, length = w+9.

Adding the border to your picture, you see that it increases each dimension by 8 ft. Now, width = w+8, and length = w+17.

Length times width = (w+8)(w+17) = w²+25w+136. This is the total area of the garden and the walkway.
