if the test counts 50% of the final grade then
the final grade = the arithmetic average of 90 and 60 = (90+60)/2 = 150/2 = 75%
if the test counts 10% of the final grade then
the final grade = a weighted average of 90 and 10 with 90 given weight of 9 and 10 a weight of 1
[9(90)+1(10)]/10= [810+10]/10= 820/10 = 82%
if the test has a weight between 10 and 50%, then the final grade is somewhere between 75 and 82
some grading schemes give even more possible weight to the final test, such as replacing your worst earlier test grade, which means more than 82% is possible as the final grade
