the width of a rectangle is four inches less than the length. the area is 165. find the width and length

Or W = L - 4

L * W = 165

L(L - 4) = 165

L² - 4L - 165 = 0

(L -15)(L + 11) = 0

L = 15 (L can't be -11!)

So W = L - 4 = 15 - 4 = 11

165 = w(w + 4)

165 = w² + 4w

0 = w² + 4w - 165
