Let's call 'some number' as the variable x.
9 is subtracted from 7 times x and that is equal to the sum of x + 3
9 - 7x = x + 3
Solving this out, you would get like terms on either side.
-8x = -6 OR 8x = 6 (either one works)
x = 6/8 or 3/4 (0.75)
