Some of the pillars of the Enlightenment are natural rights, reason, progress, and government by choice. The Declaration of Independence is an excellent example of these principles being implemented.
The Declaration states that all people have certain inalienable rights, including "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," which are inherent and independent of government. This idea is rooted in Enlightenment philosophy, which held that these rights are self-evident and that government should protect, not restrict, these rights.
