Over 20 years helping students reach and exceed their goals!
The attached video explains all steps involved.
- Solve the equation for "y" to reveal slope "m".
- 5x + 2y = 6
- -5x -5x {Subtract 5x from both sides}
- 2y =-5x+6
- 2 2 2 {Divide each term by 2}
- y = -5/2 x +3
- y = m x + b {Slope-intercept form of equation}
- m = -5/2 {Slope from equation above}
- Slopes from parallel lines are equal
- m = -5/2 {New slope = Above slope}
- Use point (-2 , -4) and new slope to find new equation
- y - y1 = m (x - x1) {Point-Slope Form of Equation}
- y-(-4 )= -5/2 (x - (-2)) {Plug in new slope and point x1= -2, y1= -4. Then solve for y }
- y + 4 = -5/2 (x + 2) {Simplify the double negatives}
- y + 4 = -5/2 x - 5 {Distribute -5/2 inside parenthesis. See video.}
- - 4 - 4 {Subtract 4 from both sides to solve for y}
- y = -5/2 x - 9 {YOUR ANSWER!!! }
