Why is my answer less when I multiply two proper fractions?

multiply two proper fractions and the product is less than etiher of the two fractions

1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8 < 1/2 and < 1/4

a fraction of any number is less than the number

1/2 x 200 = 100<200

a fraction of a fraction is also less than the fraction

when the fractions are proper, i.e. less than 1
