In teaching fractions, it is best to use visual demonstrations. Comparing fractions is a good way to start and find equivalent fractions. Just seeing for oneself in using a picture of a pizza with cut portions helps the student understand what fractions represent. Then, explain what a numerator and denominator is. Visual models and videos help in discovering fractions. I like to use these and start with a short video just to introduce the fraction subject, whether adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing. Also, relating fractions to the student’s interests will make it more personable. For example, I have done this with students who like to cook or even said they wanted to be a chef. Measuring cups is a great way to start. After fractions are mastered then teaching how to find decimals and percents with correlation of fractions is the next step, but that is another topic.
