Please help with the word problem for Alegbra?

The eight grade held an election for class president.  Five eigth-graders were absent on the day the election was held and did not vote.  Six tenths of the votes caset were votes fro the winner.  The eight grade has a total of 120 students.  How many votes did the winner recieve?

Let's list what we know:

The grade has 120 students

5 did not vote, so 115 votes

6/10 are for the winner.

 

This means that of the 115 votes, 6/10 was the winner's.

115 * ⁶/₁₀ = w

115 * ³/₅ = w

23 * 3 = w

69 = w

 

So the winner got 69 votes.

 

Let's check our answer:

115 - 69 = 46

So 115 * 4/10 (who did not vote for our winner) should equal 46.

115 * 4/10 = 46

115 * 2/5 = 46

23 * 2 = 46

46 = 46
