The motorboat travels x mph and the stream travels y mph.
When the boat travels with the current, it is moving faster, x+y mph total.
When the boat travels against the current, it is moving slower, x-y mph total.
The faster trip was 12 miles in 2 hours = 6mph = x+y
The slower trip was 12 miles in 3 hours = 4 mph = x-y
x+y=6
x=6-y
x-y=4
(6-y)-y=4
6-2y=4
2=2y
y=1 The current is moving at 1 mph.
x+y=6
x+1=6
x=5 The boat runs in still water at 5 mph.
