Let X = first number
Let Y = second number
X = 2Y + 8
X + Y = -13
Using substitution
2Y + 8 +Y = -13
3Y + 8 = -13
3Y = -21
Y = -7
X = 2(-7) + 8
X = -14 + 8
X = -6
Checking: -6 + -7 = -13
The two numbers are -6 and -7
