y=(-1/2)x -4
and
y = (-1/2)x +3
are two straight parallel lines that never intersect
they both have the same slope, -1/2, but the first line is everywhere 7 units below the 2nd line
set the y values equal, and you get
(-1/2)x -4 = (-1/2)x +3
-4 +3 is a contradiction. there is no solution, no intersection. there are no x and y values that make both equation true
it might help to graph the two lines
