If two people start jobs at same time , A. Starts at 25000 per year with 3500 raise per year and B. Starts at 37,000 with 1500 raise per year, how many years til they are earning the same? 8th grade math class question.
25,000 + 3500y = 37000 + 1500y
We want to get y by itself.
First we are going to move the 25000 to the other side by subtracting it from both sides
3500y = 37000 + 1500 y - 25000
Then we will move the 1500 y to the other side so both y terms are on the same side.
3500y - 1500y = 37000 - 25000
Now we will combine like terms
3500y - 1500y = 2000y
37000 - 25000 = 12000
So now we have
2000 y = 12000
To get y by itself we will divide by 2000 on both sides
2000 y / 2000 = 12000/2000
so y = 6
Therefore, in 6 years they will be earning the same amount
