There is an animal farm where chickens and cows live. All together, there are 89 heads and 220 legs. How many chickens and cows are there on the farm?

let x=number of chickens, y= number of cows
both chickens and cows have one head each
chickens have 2 legs and cows have 4 legs
x + y = 89 heads
2x +4y = 220 legs
divide by two
x + 2y = 110
x+ y = 89
subtract to get
2y-y = 110-89
y = 21 cows
x = 89-21 = 68 chickens
2(68)+4(21) = 136+84 = 220 legs
68 +21 = 89 heads
68 chickens and 21 cows on the farm
