See Robert K.'s answer also. (elimination method)
Substitution Method:
r = 15 - c
4r + 2c = 50
4(15 - c) + 2c = 50 Use distributive rule to eliminate paren.
60 - 4c + 2c = 50 Combine like terms.
-2c = -10 Divide by -2
c = 5
r = 15 - 5 = 10

Let r = number of rabbits
Let c = number of chickens
r + c = 15
4r + 2c = 50
I will multiply the first equation by -2 and solve by elimination.
-2r - 2c = -30
4r + 2c = 50
2r = 20
r = 10
10 + c = 15
c = 5
Checking 4(10) + 2(5) = 50
There are 10 rabbits and 4 chickens on the farm.
