If I google this question I find that the original arrangement had each piece resting on its 2"×50" edge so that the inner square is 50"×50" and the outer square is 54"×54". After the rotation and extension, the inner square will be 54"×54" and the outer square will be 70"×70". Thus the new inner-square area is 54×54 = 2916 sq. in.

As I see it the result has the pieces laying flat on the 8 inch side. Drawing a diagram there is the inner area of 50 by 50. The outer dimension is 66 by 66 (50 + 2(8)). When the gaps are filled (extended) the area is 4356. See diagram at https://brainly.in/question/47662253 with incorrect dimensions.
