Let p=pete's number of coins and b = bob's.
p/6 = b/7
7p = 6b
b = p+42
7p = 6(p+42)
7p = 6p+ 252
p = 252
b = 252 + 42 = 294
Total = 252+294 = 546 coins

for every 6 P has B has 7
B has more
1 more for every 6
B=7P/6
B has 42 more
B=42+P
7P/6= 42+P
multiplly by 6
7P = 252+6P
P = 252
B= 294
P+B= 252+294 = 546
