the total number of members lost here is
25% of 64 = 0.25 x 64 = 16
meaning that the new total will be
64 (initial members) - 16 (members lost) = 48
so there are now 48 members in the sports club

I know that the sports club started with 64 members last summer. I know that this summer they have 25% less than last summer. In order to find out what 25% of 64 is I multiply 64×25%. The answer is 16. In order to find out the number of members there are now I subtract 16 from 64. There answer is 48.

64(1-0.25) = 64-16= 48
or
64(1-0.25) = 64(0.75) = 48
