The area of a triangle when you know the base and height is given by A = (1/2)bh.
For this problem you are given the base (b) is 7 more than 8 times the height (h).
So,
8h is 8 time the height.
8h + 7 is 7 more than that.
Substituting into the formula:
1080 = (1/2) (8h+7)h
2160 = (8h+7)h Multiply both sides by 2.
2160 = 8h2+7h --distribute the h
8h2+7h-2160=0
(h-16)(8h+135) = 0 (factoring is tedious for this one)
h = 16 or h =-135/8 (reject the latter)
