Jessica ran on the track team at her school. She finished a 200-meter race in 54 seconds.


• What was Jessica’s average speed, in meters per second, for the 200-meter race? Show your work and round your answer to the nearest tenth of a meter.


Jessica ran in a 50-meter race next. On this shorter distance, Jessica’s speed was 1 meter per second faster than her speed in the 200-meter race.


• How many seconds did it take Jessica to complete the 50-meter race? Show your work and round your answer to the nearest tenth of a second.

One meter/sec faster for 2nd race is 3.7 + 1 = 4.7 m/sec. So time for 50 meters is distance/speed = 50/4.7 = 10.6 sec.
