54=hb/2= (12+b)b/2
b^2+12b =108
b^2 +12b +36 = 108+36
(b+6)^2 = 144
b +6 = 12
base = -6+12= 6 cm
height = 18 cm
Area = bh/2 = 18(6)/2=54 cm^2
or you could have factored
b^2 +12b - 108 = 0
(b-6)(b+18) = 0
b -6=0
b = 6
h = 6+12 = 18
