Michael has $1.75 in dimes and nickles in his pocket. He has 10 more dimes than nickles. How many dimes does he have?

D = N + 10

10D + 5N = 175 (all figures in cents to avoid decimals)

10(N + 10) + 5N = 175

10N + 100 + 5N = 175

15N = 75

N = 5; D = 15

Check: 5(5) + 10(15) = 25 + 150 = 175
