The accounts we have of this are limited to those provided by the conquistadors led by Hernan Cortez, so it is fair to assume they are exaggerated somewhat, but recent archaeology has uncovered a number of human skulls surrounding the famous Templor Mayor site. This at least suggest that the accounts of Cortez's men has some veracity to it.
