What would your rate be if you travelled 4 miles in 1 minute? It would be 4mi/min. I you went 9 miles in 3 minutes, then you would have a rate of 9mi/3min = 3mi/min. What about 5 miles in 10 minutes? That rate would be 5 mi/ 10 min = 1/2 mi/min.
This particular problem is complicated by the fact that you are dealing with mixed numbers.
1 1/2 mi / 2 1/4 min. = 3/2 mi / 9/4 min. What is 3/2 divided by 9/4? 3/2 (4/9) = 2/3 miles per minute. So for every minute travelled the distance covered is 2/3 of a mile.
So if you go for 28 minutes, you will have traveled 28 (2/3) = 56 / 3 = 19 1/3 miles. If you include units in the calculation it looks like this: 28 minutes (2/3) miles/ minute. Note that the minutes cancel out. Distance equals rate times time.
For 1 hour, convert 1 hour to 60 minutes and multiply times 2/3 miles per minute.
