You need to use the distance formula, which is basically the Pythagorean Theorem in cartesian coordinates 

 

d = sqrt [ (y₂ - y₁)² + (x₂ - x₁)² ] 

   = sqrt [ (10-1)² + (9-1)² ]

   = sqrt [ 9² + 8² ]

   = sqrt [ 81 + 64]

   = sqrt [ 145 ]
