9x^2 + 16y^2 = 144
x^2/4^2 + y^2/3^2= 1, center at origin
major axis = the longer axis = 2(4)=8, minor = 3(2)=6
c^2 = a^2 - b^2
c^2 = 4^2-3^2 = 16-9 =7
c = +/-sqr7
foci are on the major axis (0,sqr7), and (0,-sqr7)
Mormon or Salt Lake Tabernacle is oval shaped like an ellipse.
If you visit stand where one focus is and listen for the echo
reflected back, or have a friend stand where the other focus is
Same oval shape at the Washington Capitol Dome
While the earth travels in an elliptical orbit, it's nearly a circle. Still enough different to make
calculations of future stellar positions a little off if you went with a circle.
Halley used Sir Isaac Newton's mathematics to predict the next coming of "Halley's Comet" on its elliptical orbit
Brain Teaser: If the sun is one focus for the earth's eliptical orbit, what's at the other focus? an anti-sun? some gravity force or energy as strong as the sun? dark worm hole into another alternative universe? And is the focus different for other planets or comets "circularing" the sun in their elliptical orbits. How many fotal other foci are out there? what happens when these other foci collide? end of the world? an Anti-Big Bang?
