Onetimeuseaccount O is correct in stating that you can multiply 116 and 26 to find the answer. Here is why Onetimesueaccount O is correct. To begin lets, image that we only have three (3) boxes each weighing five (5) pounds each. We can simply multiply the two numbers and get an answer of a total of 15 pounds. So how is that. I want you to draw three boxes. In each box write the number 5 inside of it to represent the weight of each box. Now, we could add the weight of each box. 5 + 5 + 5 = 15 Pounds We could also look at it as having the number 5 written out 3 times. With that being the case, we can shorten the steps by multiplying the two numbers to get the answer. 3 boxes x 5 pounds in each box = 15 total pounds of all three boxes Just remember, you have two ways to solve the problem. When you have larger numbers, it makes it easier to multiply. Yet, you must know why you are multiplying. So let's go back to the original problem. Would you rather write out 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + 29 + ..... until you wrote out 116 of them? (or) Can you visualize each box sitting on the truck each of weighing 29 pounds each. In this case, you know and understand why you would multiply 29 x 116 to get your answer. I hope that this helps. Try checking to see if it works for small numbers first. Your turn. What if you had 4 boxes each weighing 20 pounds? What would the total weight be now? If you got 80, then you are on track! Good luck.
