asked 10/09/22how many gallons are left in the tank when the car has traveled the following distance on the highway
1 Expert Answer
it starts off with a full tank = g gallons
it goes m miles max
it gets x mpg with a full tank of g gallons
its max mileage= xg = d = m miles
distance = gallons times mpg
if it goes s miles, then it uses h gallons
s= xh = distance traveled
h=s/x
g=m/x
x =m/g
h = s/(m/g) = gs/m
gallons left = L = g-h = m/x - gs/m = (m-gsx)/mx
assuming no algebraic mistakes above,
but it's much easier to check the answer with some
more specific information, such as specific values for g, h, m and x
in order to solve for L
