An airplane flies 3900 miles into the wind for 15 hours. The return trip takes 10 hours. Find the speed of the airplane without the wind and the speed of the wind.

distance = time times speed

3900 = 15(w+p)

=10(p-w) where w= wind speed and p=plane speed without wind

390 =p-w

3900/15 = p+w

add them to elimiinate one variable

2p = 390+260= 650

p= 650/2 = 325 mph = plane's speed in still air

w =390-325= 65 mph = wind speed

check the answers

10(325+65)= 3900

15(325-65)=15(260) =3900
