The remainder theorem says that when you divide a polynomial f(x) by x-a, the remainder is equal to f(a).

Using that theorem, you're told the remainder is -1. You're also told that remainder is from division of f(x) by x-4, so a =4 in this problem. So f(a) = f(4) which is equal to -1

f(4) = -1
