two mechanics worked on a car. the first mechanic charged $75 per hour, and the second mechanic charged $115 per hour. the mechanics worked for a combined total of 35 hours, and together they charged $3225. how long did each mechanic work?

Let x and y be the times each mechanic worked.

75x + 115y = 3225

Divide through by 5

15x+23y=645

x+y = 35 ==> y = 35-x

Substitute in for y in the equation above

15x + 23(35-x)=645

15x + 805-23x=645

-8x = 645-805 = -160

x = -160/-8 = 20 hours

y = 35-20 = 15 hours
